Training Tip of the Week

HAVING A HEALTHY DOG

If you are interested in having a healthy dog, you must make sure you have a healthy puppy, makes since huh. The most important thing in having a healthy dog ( in my opinion) is feeding the right food. When you buy a puppy, make sure that you feed it right, puppies need to stay on a high protein and fat diet for at least 16 to 18 months, and there are literally hundreds of dog foods out there. But if you want some good advise, ask your vet, they can provide you with the best answer, and if your wanting to know what kind of dog food I use, well I guess I can tell you. Eukanuba Puppy, it ranges between $40.00 and $50.00 dollars for a 40 lbs. bag, but I have never experienced any digestive or eating problems with any of my dogs using this food, but once again, ask your vet, they won't steer you wrong. Puppies Chewing On Your Personal Items

If you don't want your puppy to chew on your shoes, furniture, clothes etc. read this. Most of the time people will take a newspaper and scold a puppy with it when it chews on something it is not suppose to. THIS IS A NO NO!!!!!!!!!!! If you want your dog to love you and respect you, don't ever hit it with anything, your hand, papers, etc. When you puppy starts chewing on something he or she is not allowed to chew on, simply give a loud command of NO!!!!!!!!!!!! and take that item away from the puppy, immediately after doing this, give the puppy something he or she is allowed to chew on, this will teach your puppy not to chew on items that he is not allowed to chew on as he grows into adulthood. A chew bone, or a toy made for dogs is a good item to replace your shoes, or clothes etc. Remember, taking a paper or any item and hitting your dog is a form of agitation, and some dogs will bite out of fear after several times of doing this, and they don't stay little forever.

House Breaking

Most people that have puppies want to keep them in the house, and a very popular question for most is, How do I train my dog to go outside to use the bathroom?

When you get your puppy, go straight to Wal-Mart or any other store that sells puppy pads, these are great to house break dogs, the dog virtually trains itself. Start by taking the dog to the pad and showing him where it is at, and depending on the age of the puppy, keep the pad close to him. When he starts going to the pad himself start moving the pad closer to the door you want him to go too when he has to use the bathroom. Eventually with time and patients, your puppy will go to the door and scratch or give you some type of obvious sign that he has to go outside. Also, when your puppy is small, it is very important that when the puppy wakes up, eats, or drinks, that you immediately take him to his pad or outside, you might have to walk around for a few minutes with him, but trust me, he will use the bathroom. Don't take your dogs nose and shove it in anything, all your doing is making your dog stink, your parents didn't do you that way, and dogs are very smart, just have a little patience.
