London Police to join law enforcement nationwide for annual “National Night Out”

LONDON KY— The London community is invited to the London Police Department’s annual National Night Out (NNO) crime and drug prevention event on Tuesday, August 6th that will be held at the London-Laurel County Farmer’s Market from 6 to 8 p.m. NNO is a free family friendly designated safe night out across America to promote awareness, safety and neighborhood unity.

“With over 30 community partners, a pinewood derby, food, music, games, and more – it’s safe to say it’s our biggest event yet!” said Magen Zawko, Public Information Officer for the London Police Department. “We are excited to provide a positive opportunity for all to come out and get to know our officers that are dedicated to protecting and serving their community.”

The Department is one of 18 participating police agencies within Kentucky. This event showcases the vital importance of police-community partnerships and citizen involvement on our mission to build a safer nation.

The event will be teeming with giveaways and activities including a Pinewood Derby race, corn hole games and basketball with officers, fingerprinting for children, first responder vehicles and Kentucky Army National Guard Humvees along with a gaming trailer. Food will be provided by United Way, Ice Cream from Forcht Bank and other refreshments provided by community partners. A mobile drug take-back unit will also be on-site for the community to drop off and dispose of any unwanted/unused prescription medications.

Select officers including the Chief of Police will be offering a “Pie an Officer in the Face” fundraiser for Shop with a Cop. One of their favorite attended events of the year where children in need receive shoes, clothing, and toys for Christmas. The Department is currently offering tickets for $5 for a chance to pie an officer at the event, and $20 for 10 tickets. Pies may also be purchased at the event to throw.

The Pinewood Derby participants will compete for the fastest car and best design. All entering into the Derby are encouraged to register early online at londonpd.com/nno, during the event all registrants must check-in at the registration table with their car. Cars must be decorated as a police cruiser. Weigh-in time is 6-6:30 p.m. and no cars over five ounces will be accepted. Cars are to be on display for judging at 7 p.m. and race time is at 7:30 p.m. No late entries will be accepted.

The Kentucky Blood Center’s Bloodmobile will be accepting donations from 5 to 8 p.m. One donor will win a $25 gift card and all donors will be entered to win a $500 visa gift card. Every donor, age 18 and up who donates from June 1st through September 6th will be entered to win a 2019 Toyota Tacoma.

The Farmer’s Market will be closed off from parking, the public may park at the London Community Center and other public parking areas nearby.

Schools, the City of London Fire Department, Kentucky Army National Guard, Saint Joseph London Healthy Communities, Laurel Co. Public Library, CASA of Knox-Laurel Counties, Forcht Bank, Kentucky Department of Child Based Services, Pearl Apparel, AT&T, Dunkin Donuts of London, Mindsight Behavioral Group, Finley’s Fun Center, Sacred Grounds, and Operation UNITE.
